End of the racing season : feeding during the moulting period

We saw in a previous article that the 3 keywords for successful moulting are: energy, minerals and physiological health.

Energy will be provided in the ration thanks to lipids. Practically, a good “moulting” mix should contain a certain percentage of oil seeds. These seeds are characterised by their high oil content. Linseed, rapeseed and sunflower seed contain 33, 42 and 44% fat respectively. However, they are also rich in proteins. These seeds provide between 3 and 4% of minerals. You should therefore be careful to ensure that this type of seed is present in your moulting mix.

We have seen the importance of minerals, especially sulphur, in the development of a resistant and quality plumage. It is, therefore, necessary to make sure that the pigeons always have a complete mixture of minerals at their disposal. Zinc is also important during the moulting period. A deficiency usually results in the formation of bad feathers. A lack of iron causes the feathers to discolour.

Physiological health is necessary for the assimilation of nutrients. It is often said that not only what the pigeon eats is important, but what it digests is also important! A well-functioning liver and kidneys are a guarantee for a successful moult. This is why at the end of the season it is important to support this physiological work with plants that are known to promote the proper functioning of the liver and kidneys. Vitamins, especially from the B group, especially B1 which contains sulphur, can be served for 2 to 3 days each week. The addition of brewer’s yeast, rich in proteins and vitamins, is a good alternative to balance a slightly deficient ration. There are pigeon supplements containing vitamins and herbs for a smooth moulting process. Care must be taken to ensure that these supplements served are free of doping substances.
This way, the moulting process is smooth and is a step towards a successful moult in 2021.
